Transcript of ABC's Prisoner of Azkaban sneak peek

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint hosted ABC's showing of the extended version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, followed by ten minutes including interviews and film footage from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, coming out in theaters on June 4, 2004.

Dumbledore: Welcome, welcome, to another year at Hogwarts!

[This cues the beginning to video clips from the trailers]

[The Making of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban]

Daniel Radcliffe: And now we would like to share with you this exclusive sneak preview of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Emma Watson: You'll definitely notice a few new things- new characters, new creatures, and finally Hermione wearing jeans!
Rupert Grint: As you can see, we've grown a bit. So enjoy the show!

[Behind-the-scenes video clips air]

Emma Watson: This one is sort of the bigger picture.
Rupert Grint: Yeah, it's a lot darker as well. There's a lot more scary things in it.
Daniel Radcliffe: The fact that it's darker is because it's in the book.
Rupert Grint: In the second one we had the spiders, that was scary for me. But this time, we got Dementors.
Emma Watson: It's a very different ballgame to go from, you know, creepy spiders to suddenly, you know, peoples which suck your soul out.
Daniel Radcliffe: We do have a lot of things in this one.
Rupert Grint: Yeah, the hippogriffs were really cool.
Daniel Radcliffe: The Prisoner of Azkaban, compared to the last two films, is a lot different. There's so many different people.
Emma Watson: Emma Thompson, I was so pleased to be working with her.

[Emma Thompson as Professor Trelawney speaks to Hermione: "You may be young in years, but the heart that beats from beneath your bosom is as shriveled as an old maid's."]

Daniel Radcliffe: Gary Oldman, I have so much respect for him as an actor.
Emma Watson: Michael Gambon entered into his own perception of what Dumbledore was gonna be like.
Rupert Grint: He was really amazing.

[Michael Gambon as Dumbledore enters into the Hospital Wing, where Ron is lying injured on a bed. Dumbledore says to Ron: "A child's voice, however honest and true, is meaningless to lose who cannot listen."]

Daniel Radcliffe: It's a much funnier film.

[Stan Shunpike to Harry (on Magnolia Crescent): "Welcome to the Knight Bus- Emergency transport for a stranded witch or wizard."]

Emma Watson: Smack, bam, crash!
Daniel Radcliffe: I get thrown against windows- I'm all over the place!
Emma Watson: I think you can tell it's a different director. He's just done it in a different way; it's great.

Alfonso Cuaron: Chris Columbus had done the first two films, and he had put together a universe that was very eloquent. So I felt very comfortable to play in that universe.
Chris Columbus: Alfonso's got a really good visual sense. He's always been really strong with actors, and I really grew to care about these kids.
And I wanted to make sure they were in the hands of someone who would take care of them, to look out for their best interests. And I think they formed a really strong relationship.
Alfonso Cuaron: I was the luckiest guy because I got these three kids that they'd done already two 'Harry Potter's. They knew everything relating about their own characters, and the universe around them.
Chris Columbus: I was completely blown away by their performances, because there's such a maturity, there's such an assurance, there's confidence.

[Alfonso Cuaron shown during filming, telling Emma Watson to "loosen up."]

Emma Watson: Alfonso, he was very trusting, he wanted us to put a lot of ourselves and our thoughts into the characters. He'd always turn around and say to you, 'You come up with whatever feels natural.'
Daniel Radcliffe: And eventually I think we all got into that, it I think it worked really well in the end.
Rupert Grint: Yeah, that was quite cool. He's funny, really funny. Easy to work with, as well.

[NEW footage: Trio at a table.
Hermione: You know the ancient Egyptians used to worship cats.
Ron: Cats? Along with a dungbeetle.]

Emma Watson: In the series so far, you have never, ever seen us fight. And then suddenly in this one, it all falls apart. It's me and Ron.
Rupert Grint: Yeah.
Emma Watson: Where this gets- it gets really bad. It's the whole cat-and-the-rat thing, isn't it?

[NEW footage: Trio outside.
Hermione: Ronald lost his rat.
Ron: I haven't lost anything! Your cat killed him!]

David Heyman: The actors are growing up with the characters, and the characters are growing up with the story, and the story itself is obviously much more mature.
Daniel Radcliffe: In this film, there's a major stand towards the Dursleys. With Aunt Marge getting inflated by a spell that I don't even try to do it.

[NEW footage: Aunt Marge inflating in the kitchen; Harry burning with anger. Footage of Aunt Marge floating away, from the trailer, is then shown.]

Emma Watson: In this one, Hermione really comes into her own.

[Hermione approaches Draco outside: "You foul, loathesome, evil little cockroach!" In the background, Harry is heard yelling "Hermione, no!"]

Emma Watson: It's like I'm using a different person. You know, she's got power. Malfoy insults her...

[Malfoy: "Filty little mudblood!"]

Emma Watson: ...and instead of "Keep walking, just ignore him," that's it- smack!

[Hermione is shown punching Draco]

Daniel Radcliffe: It's about time, really.
Emma Watson: Yeah. Take him down a peg or two. We look like teenagers.
Daniel Radcliffe: Yes, yeah.
Emma Watson: I mean, Hermione gets to wear jeans.
Rupert Grint: Ron's clothes, they stay the same throughout the whole thing; it's like Weasley jumpers and poor clothes.

[Dan, Emma, and Rupert laugh]

Rupert Grint: I like that. I felt that you got into the character a bit more.

[Footage from trailers with Prisoner of Azkaban theme song]

David Heyman: The Prisoner of Azkaban refers to a character by the name of Sirius Black, who's spent the last twelve years in prison, because it is thought that he murdered, or is responsible for the murder of Harry's parents. When the film began, the Prisoner of Azkaban has escaped and is on the run and coming to find Harry Potter.

[NEW footage: Seamus Finnagin runs into the Great Hall and yells to the Gryffindors, "He's been sighted, he's been sighted!" When Ron asks, "Who?" he replies, "Sirius Black!" They all then gather around Seamus' newspaper and read the article.]

Gary Oldman: I look like I've escaped from a prison, don't I? [Laughs]
Daniel Radcliffe: Working with Gary Oldman this time was just the highlight of my life! You know, when you work with, like, Gary and David Thewlis, who's amazing, like, really. Just the scenes with David are filmed just stunning. And Timothy Spall and Alan Rickman, all in the same room at the same time, it's kind of, I'm just standing in the corner and be quiet, and you guys can...yeah
Emma Watson (spoken at the same time as Daniel Radcliffe is speaking): It's a bit of "Whoa, okay!" No pressure, no pressure.

[NEW footage: Dumbledore and Filch approach the tattered Fat Lady's portrait.
Dumbledore: Dear lady, who did this to you?
The Fat Lady: He's here! Somewhere in the castle! Sirius Black!]

Michael Gambon: It's like every actor's fantasy, isn't it? I mean, I'm Dumbledore and being in 'Harry Potter'. So I'm delighted, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Maggie Smith: This is a stunning cast this time and they're so good, all those guys. There's a whole lot new, the magic never kind of goes. It's a magic place to be.

[NEW footage: Professor Trelawney talks to her students: "I am Professor Trelawney. Together we shall cast ourselves into the future!"]

Alfonso Cuaron: She potrays this eccentric character.
Daniel Radcliffe: Professor Trelawney seems our actual instructor. Emma Watson: She's insane. She's absolutely crazy. And your reactions of her are really funny.
Daniel Radcliffe: I like those scenes with me and Rupert in Divination, kinda slowly falling asleep and then being woken up by her huge eyes behind these glasses.
Emma Thompson: She does see really, truly frightening things. She's looking into teacups, so she sees something very nasty in store for Harry.

[NEW footage: Trelawney to Harry: "You have...the Grim!"]

Emma Thompson: She wretches out the suspense, basically. She's there to sort of really get the plot going and get us all feeling a bit nervous.

[In the Great Hall, Dumbledore says, "Our own Rubeus Hagrid!" while the students cheer]

Rupert Grint: Hagrid becomes a teacher in this one.

[NEW footage: Hagrid, during a class, to Harry: "How am I doing me first day?" Harry responds: "Brilliant! ...Professor!"]

Emma Watson: He's so pleased to be a professor.

[NEW footage: Hagrid, during a class: "Isn't he beautiful?"]

Robbie Coltrane: Basically, he's in charge of the magical creatures and some of them are a bit unpredictable.

[NEW footage: Hagrid's class is outside.
Ron: Exactly what is that?
Hagrid: That, Ron, is a hippogriff!]

Rupert Grint: Yeah, that was really amazing. Just like, half horse, half eagle, half a mouse, quite cool.
Robbie Coltrane: And it's Hagrid's job to introduce it to the children and show them how to do it right and how not to offend it or frighten it and so on. And, of course, guess who gets it wrong?

[NEW footage: Malfoy is attacked by Buckbeak]

Daniel Radcliffe: Dobby was kind of the star, I think. Buckbeak's gonna be the star of this one.
Emma Watson: He is so real, so real.

Alfonso Cuaron: The film is sort of filled with magic and magical creatures; that's all looking really cool. We have a werewolf, the Monster Book of Monsters.
Daniel Radcliffe: And you do kinda think that if all textbooks had teeth and were this vicious, you pay a lot more attention.
Emma Watson: Attention in class, yeah.
Alfonso Cuaron: There's that creature, the Dementors, that they project that fear within.

[NEW footage: Dementors]

Daniel Radcliffe: It acted almost as a wakeup call to say, "I do have weakness, I'm not that kind of powerful or that strong."
Alfonso Cuaron: The theme of the film, these kids finding identity as a teenager and is learning that both the fears and the power to fight them reside within.

[Harry to Hermione: "I hope he finds me, 'cause when he does, I'm gonna be ready!"]

Daniel Radcliffe: It's a more of an emotional journey than the other two.
Emma Watson: Yeah, it's all emotional, and everyone's on the edge.
Rupert Grint: Yeah.
Daniel Radcliffe: And then it's really exciting.
Emma Watson: Yeah.

[Footage from theatrical trailer, ending with Harry's "Expecto Patronum!"]

Daniel Radcliffe: Well, that's all about we have time for tonight.
Emma Watson: We hope you enjoyed seeing the film and our special sneak preview as much as we've enjoyed making all the Harry Potter over the past few years.
Rupert Grint: We had a great time being your hosts this evening, and look foward to seeing you again when the movie opens June 4.
