Biography: Kenneth Branagh was born December 10, 1960 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Ken is the second of three children born to William and Frances Branagh. In 1969, the Branagh family left Ireland and settled in Reading, England. In 1979, Ken attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After finishing his education he joined The Royal Shakespeare Company and began his stage career, winning several awards and critical acclaim for his portrayal of Henry V. He later left the R.S.C. to form his own theater company "Renaissance." This new venture was quickly succesful and enabled Ken to direct, produce, and star in his own productions. While working on so many of his own projects he continued to work on other television and film productions. Ken made a film version of Henry V which became a huge success, earning him numerous awards and two Academy Award nominations. Branagh met his first wife Emma Thompson when the two filmed the BBC mini series "The Fortunes of War." Branagh and Thompson became known as "The Royal Couple of British Film." Their marriage ended after 6 years. Following his divorce, he made a film version of Hamlet and recieved great critical acclaim for the four hour long motion picture. Since then, he has continued his successful carreer working in films, television, and theater. His most recent project is the highly regarded production of "The Play What I wrote" in London.
