Biography: Michael started off working as an engineer. At the age of 21 he decided he wanted to become an actor. He then joined the National Theatre under the Artistic Directorship of Sir Laurence Olivier. He went on to star in a number of leading roles in plays
written by Alan Ayckbourn. John Dexter's The Life of Galileo in 1980 catapulted his career. He has regularly appeared at the Royal
National Theatre and the RSC. Sir Ralph Richardson described him as being The Great Gambon. Gambon is now considered to be one of the British theatre's leading lights.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, he became Sir Michael Gambon several years ago, despite having been born in the "Republic"
of Ireland.
