Order of the Phoenix:
Michael Goldenberg
Michael Goldenberg is the new screenwriter for the fifth Harry Potter movie, The Order of the Phoenix. He was selected to write the script in November 2004 after Steve Kloves, the screenwriter for the first four films, stepped down.
David Heyman, the producer of the Harry Potter movies, said, "Michael is someone who I have been a fan of for a long time. I've read his scripts and seen his films for a while, Contact, and the like. He was somebody who I'd been speaking to for a while."
Michael Goldenberg wrote some script pages for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but although the producers liked them, they were already leaning towards Steve Kloves.
Since 1996, Goldenberg has written four scripts and directed one film. Bed of Roses (1996), which he wrote and directed, received terrible reviews from critics. Mike Clark of USA Today wrote, "Don't blame the leads, but the movie has less emotional resonance than an old FTD florist commercial with Merlin Olsen."
Contact, which was released in 1997, was reviewed much more favorably by critics. James Sanford of the Kalamazoo Gazette praised Goldenberg's script: "The build-up of the film is exceptionally well written, as 'Contact' gives us two attractive adults who actually discuss issues and concepts instead of trading coy double entendres."
The next movie that Goldenberg wrote was Peter Pan, which was released in 2003. Although the movie itself received admirable reviews, the critics who pin-pointed the script had negative things to say. John Venable of Supercalafragalistic.com wrote that "A few additions into the script would've turned this from good to darn near great." Desson Thomson of the Washington Post said, "With only a few exceptions, the performances (and the script) range between dull and mediocre."
Michael Goldenberg's next movie, Where the Wild Things Are, is currently in pre-production and is set to be released in 2005.
David Heyman said the following about Goldenberg's writing style: "Hopefully it will continue to be in the spirit of the book. The scripts are in the spirit of the books and that will continue."
